Who may attend high school equivalency classes?
- Students over the age of 16 who have yet earned their high school diploma.
- You may not be enrolled in any other high school program, if enrolling with the CRC.
- Students who want to improve their knowledge and skills in reading, math, writing, science, and social studies.
When are classes held?
- We are open from 10 AM – 6 PM Monday through Thursday and 8 AM – 3 PM on Fridays! With our small class sizes, we’re able to provide one-on-one and small group support to all of our students. This means that you can come at any time that works for you!
- If these hours don’t work, let us know! We have instructors available by appointment for evening hours, as well.
- Orientation is on a rolling basis. Students can sign up any time by calling or stopping into our office!
What can I expect from the High School Equivalency program?
- First, you will meet with the director or coordinator to create and discuss your academic goals, and to complete the enrollment paperwork.
- Next, you will complete the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) to assess your prior knowledge in reading, math, and language.
- Once you’ve finished the TABE, you will review the test results and create a learning plan with one of our instructors.
- Then, you will work with instructors for however long you need on intentionally-designed lessons to boost your skills in reading, math, writing, science, and social studies.
- Periodically, you may be retested to see how much progress you’ve made in these subjects.
- When you feel confident and the retests show that you’re ready, you’ll take a HiSET Practice Test to see if you’re prepared for the official test.
- You can take the 5 tests at any time in any order. When you pass a test, you are done with that subject.
- After you pass all 5 tests, you’ll be invited to celebrate with us at our next CRC Graduation the following July!
What High School Equivalency test does the CRC use?
- The CRC uses the Indiana HiSET exams. For more information on HiSET, visit their website: hiset.org/prepare-for-your-test
- To earn a High School Equivalency diploma, you must pass all 5 HiSET tests in the areas of:
- Reading
- Language & Writing
- Math
- Science
- Social Studies
- Each test is scored on a scale of 1 to 20. You must pass each individual test and earn a combined score of 45 points or more across all 5 tests to earn your diploma.
- Each test is offered both digitally and on paper.
- If you are enrolled as a CRC student and have scored “Prepared” on a HiSET Official Practice test, then your test is free!
What if I have trouble learning?
- Don’t worry! This is very common, especially after a student has been out of school for an extended period.
- If you had an IEP in school, we may be able to incorporate those accommodations into our instruction. If approved, you may be able to use accommodations such as read-aloud services or extra time while taking the HSE test.
- We provide assistance to help each student succeed at their own pace.
- We encourage students to spend at least 6 hours a week on their learning.
- We provide resources and instruction to make this possible.
How can I get started?
- Call the CRC at 812-988-5880 to schedule an appointment or stop in while we’re open. Classes are free!
The CRC is also a HiSET public testing site!
If you have started your HiSET testing elsewhere, or feel prepared to begin testing immediately, call 812-988-5880 to schedule your test and start working toward your high school equivalency diploma.
We need at least 24 hours notice in order to schedule any test. The cost per HiSET subject test is $36. You must be an Indiana resident for at least 30 days prior to testing and bring a state-issued ID with you on the day of testing in order to sit for the exam.
