Who may attend high school equivalency classes?
- Students over the age of 16 who have yet earned their high school diploma.
- Students who want to improve their knowledge and skills in reading, math, writing, science, and social studies.
When are classes held?
- Tuesday through Thursday from 12:00 to 4:00 PM
- Individual appointments may be made for evening or Monday hours.
- Orientation is typically held once a month for new learners.
What if I have trouble learning?
- Don’t worry! This is very common, especially after a student has been out of school for an extended period.
- If a student had an IEP in school, we may be able to incorporate those accommodations into our instruction. If approved, the student may use them while taking the HSE test.
- We provide assistance to help each student succeed at his or her own pace.
- Students are not compared with one another.
- We encourage students to spend at least 6 hours a week on their learning. We provide resources and instruction to make this possible.
What are some of the things I will be doing in the high school equivalency program?
- Create and discuss your academic goals with the instructor.
- Complete a locator assessment (very short – designed to help instructors choose the correct testing level for you).
- Complete TABE testing in reading, math computation, applied math skills, and language.
- Review the results of testing and discuss your learning plan.
- Work with instructors on intentionally-designed lessons to boost your reading, math, writing, science, and social studies skills.
- Periodically, students will be retested to find out how much progress they have made.
- When retesting shows enough progress, students take the HSE readiness assessments to see if they are ready to pass the HiSET test.
- Take and pass all 5 HiSET tests.
- Receive your high school diploma.
- Celebrate with us at graduation at the CRC next July!
