Van Buren Elementary is a nationally-recognized 2021 Blue Ribbon School, serving students in grades Pre-K – 5. Our school is located in the southeast corner of Brown County, Indiana, and Van Buren Elementary is one of three elementary schools in the Brown County School Corporation.
The school day begins at 7:50 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. Van Buren Elementary school’s facility has classrooms dedicated for Pre-K through fifth grade, as well as dedicated rooms for science, special education, counseling, and speech-language therapy. In addition, the school facilities include a STEM lab, music classroom, art room, playground, shelter house, cafeteria, gymnasium, office, and teacher workroom, and professional development space. The school benefits from being located close to Indiana University. As such, Van Buren Elementary is host to many university students each year. This enables faculty to gain insight into current research and teaching strategies. The school is the focal point for many community activities, as well. Facilities are used throughout the year for family reunions, basketball, softball, baseball, volleyball, soccer, 4-H, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and adult recreation. In addition, the school is used as a site for the Brown County Schools Before–School Care Program and After-School Care Program.
Welcome to Van Buren Elementary School–home of the Wildcats! My name is Gavin Steele and I am in my fourth year as principal at VBES. I started my career at Nashville Elementary, as a third grade teacher. I was at Nashville for five years before I transitioned to Brown County High School to teach special education. After teaching special education for a year, I had the opportunity to serve as the assistant principal/athletic director at Brown County Junior High for three years. All of these opportunities helped guide me back to this elementary leadership position, where I am proud and honored to be a part of the Van Buren Community. The students, staff, and families here model the true representation of a community family.
